The 23 Martam  Gram  Panchayat Unit is located under jurisdiction of Gyalshing – Barnyak Constituency, 49 kilometer form district head quarter, Rabdentse (Gyalshing) West Sikkim. The area covered 520.86 hectares and area of forest 66.20 hectares approximately in it.  It is bounded by Kalej khola in the North, Renock Khola in the west, Reshi Khola in the East and Barsey Rhododendron wild life century area in the South. The natural  environment decorated such as Renock khola, Bhuttay khola, Reshi khola and many others perennial streams which have comparatively high  flow of water during rainy season. This GPU is also decorated by various pet animals and wild birds, animals and shiny of Kanchenjunga hill to the North direction and as it is surrounded by natural wanders every tourist willing to visit on tourist spot all the times. 

 

Office Premise of the GPU

There are 30% of Below Poverty Line people living within GPU. Their main source of income are showing / cultivating Paddy, Maze, Millet, Ginger, Potato, Cardamom, Orange and vegetables etc and rearing Goat, Chicken, Pig, Buffalo, Cow etc. They use to sale milk products, meat, egg and cash crops in order to manage their family. The BPL families are getting financial assistance from State Government and Central Government through various departments and Panchayati Raj Institutions. The GPU area comprises of private land, reserve forests, Gaucharan, khasmal and slip reserve. Biodiversity assumes great importance in the GPU in view of its potential to offer food and environmental security to the human being.

This Gram Panchayat Unit consisted with five wards viz. Martam Sherpagaon, Martam Srijunga, Martam Rafong, Arithang Daragaon and Martam Ghaiyabari. In this GPU the following categories are living jointly in several villagers like Chettri, Bahun, Rai, Limbu, Bhutia, Lepcha, Gurung, Kami, Damai, Sarki,Newar, Sherpa, Sanesi and others.
